Death of Mr. Moore Hunter. Hawera & Normanby Star, Volume XXXIV, Issu e 3 462, 3 February 1897, Page 2 Death of Mr. Moore Hunter. We regre t havi ng to record the death of Mr Moore Hunter, which occurred at hi s reside nce this morning about halfpast six. It is pretty generally k nown Mr Hu nter had been in more or less feeble health for some time p ast, an atta ck of pleurisy having resulted in a complication of disea ses from which l atterly it was hardly hoped he would rally. Indeed, d uring the past few d ays his hold on life was most precarious, thoug h friends who knew littl e of his real condition, but relied on the wo nderful recuperatve power h e had from time to time shown, hoped tha t he might be again seen about. H owever, the end came, as stated thi s morning. Mr Hunter was a colonist o f very old standing. He was bor n in the village of Braidwood, Lanarkshi re, but at an early age the s turdy independence which he showed in late r years began to develope , and he emigrated to Canada, and after a visi t to Scotland again wen t out, but in time the more genial climate of Ne w Zealand attracted h im. The oldest settlers on the coast remember him a t Kai Iwi, where i n the days of native troubles he had to bear his part w ith his fello w settlers, and we believe, though we are not quite certai n, that h e was a member of the Kai Iwi troop, wich which the Hon. John B ryce w as assooiatad. Later on Mr Hunter had a farm at Waitotara now occ upie d by Mr William Parsons, which he sold and came on to Hawera. This m u st have been early in the seventies, and just at that time Hawera wa s b eing re-settled after Titokowaru's war. The land about here had be en di vided up into small sections and military settlers were encourag ed to s ettle, privates getting 50 acre scrip and officers larger. Bu t a large s lice of land running to the southward and westward of th e present town s ite had been marked off as a railway reserve, and thi s the Government d etermined to sell. Mr Hunter, among others, was a p urchaser at the sale , acquiring sections which formed the nucleus o f the present fine estat e of Burnside, whereon he made his home, rear ed his family, and has now d ied. It was like the other unoccupied lan d, fern and tutu, and in a rou gh state, and its present condition, i n which it is perhaps one of the b est cultivated, clean, and most pro ductive farms on the coast is a trib ute to the energy and hard work a nd persevarance of this pioneer settle r. During his long residence i n the district Mr Hunter built up a reput ation as a careful, good far mer, liberal in his ideas of how to treat l and and breed stock the su ccess of which policy has been often shown in t he show rings of the E gmont, Wanganui, Palmerston North, and other agri cultural and pastora l societies. For many years fellow settlers were gl ad to get the bene fit of his business shrewdness and experience on loca l bodies, and h e was successively a member of the Patea County Council, H awera Roa d Board, and Hawera County Council ; while as to the A. and P. S ociet y he wss not only in evidence at show time, but a valued officer f ro m the inception of this institution. All movements which he consider e d for the solid advantage and prosperity of the district be was a su ppo rter of, and was ready to help both with purse and work. Of the Pr esbyt erian Church he was a consistent member and a great helper ; non e knew h is worth and his liberality better, perhaps, than those assoc iated with h im in that Communion ; and all bodies which sought to pro mote the socia l and moral well-being of the people were ever sure o f help from him. P rivately, there was no man whom one would be less d isposed to approach h ad he a weak case ; or more ready, if he had a c ase really deserving of h elp. Mr Hunter had the power and courage o f discrimination; qualities m uch rarer than they should be for the we ll being of the community. As t o colonial politics, he never sought a ny public office, but his interes t was keen and his feelings strong . Mr Hunter leaves a widow and family o f eight (and several brother s and other relatives) to mourn him, and th e district, which in a wid e sense is a loser by his death, will sympath ise with them in their l oss.
